New Delhi: Taking advantage of people's curiosity, a wicked developer uploaded a fake BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app for Android to Google Play, thereby fooling a hatful of Android users. According to a CNET report, a fake BBM app made its way to Google Play and duped hundreds of thousands before Google pulled the app off its store.
The phoney app was spotted carrying the app name 'blackberry messenger bbm', created by a developer called RIM. It seems that people who downloaded the app were not aware of the fact that BlackBerry phones are no longer called RIM. The company changed its name from RIM to BlackBerry in January.
"More than 100,000 people downloaded the app, presenting them with a screen promising the app would start working on 27 June. If that didn't start alarm bells ringing, the app followed up with an agreement to allow advertising network StartApp to install icons, bookmarks and more on your phone," reports CNET.
BlackBerry had announced its plans to bring its popular instant messaging system BBM on rival devices on May 14. However, the company has not yet revealed as to when the app will be available to Android and iOS users. The company only says the BBM for Android and iOS will be available in summer. There is no official date announced as yet.
