CHENNAI: DMK president M Karunanidhi on Monday criticised Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for confining the probe into charges of land grabbing to his party’s previous tenure.Reacting to her announcement of setting up special units in the police department to investigate allegations of land grabbing, Karunanidhi wondered “which special unit” would probe the charges of land grabbing during the AIADMK’s 2001-06 tenure.“Land grabbing and frauds are no doubt wrong. For a government, it would only be appropriate to probe such charges during all periods and against all persons, whoever they may be. Otherwise, this can only be a decision to hurl charges at certain people.” Although certain people might have sold their lands as per the norms, some of them might approach the special units claiming that their lands were taken away forcibly as the same land would now fetch a far better price, he added. He wanted the State to approach the issue cautiously to protect genuine buyers.
