CHENNAI: In a first-of-its-kind event, the gay and bisexual community from the city organised ‘Smile Please! (a Gay-n-ocular view)’, a photo and art exhibition with the aim of clearing misconceptions about the lifestyle that gay men lead.Organised by Chennai Dost, a support group for gay and bisexual men in Chennai, the one-day exhibition was a part of their third anniversary celebrations. Photographs, paintings and artwork by the members of Chennai Dost were on display at Spaces, in Besant Nagar. Bright rainbow flags and a traditional pookalam decorated the space.Vikranth, the founder of Chennai Dost, said that there were many misconceptions about the gay life, which they wanted to dispel. “People consider us introverts, sex maniacs and perverts, but that is not true. We too have a life. The aim is to give an insight into our lives — to prove that we have artistic and other talents,” he said.Dev, whose artwork was on display, said, “My drawings depict the kind of life we will have to wait centuries to see. It shows the freedom we want to enjoy just like everyone else.” Another artist, who had painted a canvas riotous with colour said, “I wanted to show the kind of happy and bright lives we lead.”The highlight of the display was a golu depicting a gay wedding, being conducted in a traditional way. Senthil, the event coordinator said, “This is a representation of a fantasy, where two men can marry with the blessings and happiness of the entire family and community.” Photographs showing the Gay Pride March held in Chennai, Bangalore and other places were on display, as were photos of gay men going about their everyday tasks like cooking and generally enjoying life.Sunil Menon, founder of Sahodaran (an NGO in support of the LGBT community), inaugurated the event. Many people, from both within and outside the LGBT community attended.
