KOCHI: The Kochi city police have begun the crack-down on those flouting    traffic norms with over 200 people losing their driving licences for drunk, rash and negligent driving in the city during February. Though cases were registered against 432 people, only half of them had their   licences suspended. Most of them were booked by the police and the Motor Vehicles Department  (MVD) for drunk driving, speeding, using mobiles while driving and flouting  traffic norms. The cases were later handed over to the MVD and 213 licences were suspended after the hearing. Of the 213 cases, 60 per cent were for drunk driving and 20 per cent were    for using mobile phones. The remaining were for speeding and disobeying  traffic rules.  “We had called as many as 300 people for hearing before suspending their   licences. They will have to wait for a few more months to even apply for a   new licence,” said Road Transport Officer T J Thomas.  The licence of those booked for rash and negligent driving would be sent to  the MVD within three  days and the person concerned will be called in for the   hearing within a week. The action would be taken in another week. The MVD  is planning to implement a system wherein every time a person flouts a   traffic norm, his or her licence would be punched. The licence will be  suspended after three punching. The system will be launched in two or three months. Amendments Soon Meanwhile, the police officials said amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act  will be made once the order from the State Government in this regard is out. “Stringent action will be taken by the police and the MVD. We want our roads to be safe for the people to travel. The  amendment is expected to decrease the number of road accidents,” the police official said.
