PUDUCHERRY: Pointing to the deterioration of law and order in the Union territory,  Union Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Pension, Public grievance, V Narayanasamy cautioned the Puducherry government to set right the situation  and not  force the Central government to intervene in the administration of the Union Territory.“Though the UT comes under the direct control of the Ministry of Home affairs, so far we have not intervened,” he said speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday. He said that in just 100 days, 22 murders had taken place. Jewellery theft, particularly chain snatching, has become routine. The peace of  Puducherry was being disturbed and this would become a deterrent to tourists. The Minister in Charge (Chief minister)  is responsible for the situation and it reflects on his  competency. Narayanasamy said that he had called on the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to seek a status report from the Puducherry government. He also spoke to the  Lieutenant Governor with regard to the prevailing situation. There was more police force in proportion to the size of the UT. Narayanasamy regretted that some sections of police,  instead of being involved in maintenance of law and order, had joined hands with criminal groups that had been involved in land and house grabbing, committing murders for monetary gain. The government should  take stern action against them.Cong-DMK in fray The Congress would nominate a  candidate to contest the Indira Nagar bye election, said Narayanasamy. Though the candidate would be decided after discussion with the allies by Sonia Gandhi, his preference would be for a Congress candidate as he/she would be from a national party.Rangasamy govt flayedNarayanasamy flayed the AINRC government for failing to fulfil their election promises which continued to remain in the manifesto. He said that job for one person from every household, fee reimbursement for CENTAC- sponsored students and laptops for students had not materialised. Free washing machines have been limited to Scheduled Caste people, who said that they did not want them. Old age pension has been raised to `1500 instead of `2000 as promised. The  ministry has not paid adequate attention to Karaikal, he said, adding that ministers had visited the region only once.
