CHENNAI: The DMK on Saturday announced the names of more candidates for the coming local body elections. The party named one mayoral candidate, four candidates for Municipal Chairman, 320 candidates for wards across four Corporations and 367 candidates for Town Panchayats.The party named its Salem Urban district secretary S D Kalaiamuthan its mayoral candidate for Salem. It also named R Punithavathi, N P Velmurugan, B Gopal and T S M Basha as its candidates for chairmanship of Athur, Narasingapuram, Mettur and Edapatti municipalities, respectively.The DMK also named 320 candidates for wards across four Corporations - 100 each in Madurai and Coimbatore and 60 each in Erode and Thoothukudi. Also announced were 367 candidates for Town Panchayats spread out across 25 districts.Party chief M Karunanidhi said a decision was yet to be made on when the DMK would officially start campaigning for the local body polls, which are scheduled to be held across two phases on October 17 and 19.With some candidates yet to be named, the DMK top brass is expected to continue deliberations over them in the coming days.
