The owner of a farmyard has petitioned the district administration on Monday demanding the closure of a blue metal crushing unit adjacent to his farmyard in Alamelumangapuram Village near Vellore. The petitioner, Ganesan, alleged that the impact of the blast hurled stones into the air in all directions and many of them land in his farmyard causing injuries to the livestock and the men working in the farm.
The petitioner added that it had become difficult for him to get workers to take care of the animals in the farmyard as they feared that working in the farmyard was dangerous.
“I am having my farm house within 50 feet of the stone crushing unit. Due to the blast, the stones are thrown into my farm house and they injure the cattle. The stone crushing unit is also a cause of concern for the local residents,” said the petitioner.
The Madras High Court, in its direction issued on August 24, 2012, in connection with the petition filed by Ganesh, directed the district administration to immediately conduct an enquiry into the issue and take appropriate action within a period of six weeks.
After submitting the petition copy along with the court direction to District Revenue Officer A Sundaravalli, Ganesh said that he and few others had brought the issue to the notice of the district administration seven months ago demanding the cancellation of permit for the stone quarry.
Following the representation, officials from Pollution Control Board had conducted a spot inspection. However, no action had been taken to close down the stone quarry run by C K Devendiran.
Ganesh said there were around 10 houses abutting the stone quarry and they had developed cracks due to the blasting operations. The environment in the locality had been polluted and the air was filled with quarry dust, causing health hazards for the residents in the area.
