Diamond-bearing rocks are found in Kurnool and other districts of Andhra Pradesh. According to the Local 18 Andhra Pradesh, people believe that with the monsoon season, there will be a growth in the diamonds in the Kurnool district as well. Now pre-monsoon showers are happening in Karnataka. Farmers from Tuggali, Jonnagiri, Maddikera, and surrounding mandals have started to gather in the fields. Many villages together form a mandal. They hope to make it big by unearthing precious gems. Farmers firmly believe that these monsoon showers have the capacity to lead an increase in the diamonds in Kurnool villages. Also known as the Gateway to Rayalaseema, Kurnool was ruled by the Emperor Krishna Devaraya.
The natives in these villages keep searching for the diamonds from 08:00 AM in the morning till night. They continue to search for diamonds in the fields together with their families. The people are so deeply engaged in diamond hunting, thinking that if they search hard, they will be able to find a diamond piece. As per the beliefs of the people, if the natives are out of luck, they could discover at least one diamond and their difficulties will end. The natives revealed that after a relentless search, some farmers in these villages were able to find diamonds with a value of more than Rs 20 lakh.
As per the reports, Rayalaseema has been known for trading precious stones and diamonds during the Vijaynagar Empire. Diamonds were sold like food products in the market of Hampi in the earlier days. Areas in Kurnool and Anantapur districts have been the most preferred spots for diamond hunters testing their luck during the monsoon season every year. The dry lands in Tuggali, Jonnagiri, Maddikere in Kurnool and Vajrakarur in Anantapur districts had precious stones appearing in the dry lands during the rainy season for decades.
Searching for the diamonds is a normal phenomenon, but some locals object to it due to the hindrance caused to the agricultural activities. A native named K Mallanna from Tuggali mandal told Deccan Chronicle that despite their requests, people had attempted to enter their fields for diamond hunting.
