Diabetes Foot clinic to be launched

KOCHI: Silverline Diabetes Foot Clinic ,the first foot clinic  in Kochi set up by  Silverline Hospital, will be launched on World Diabetes Day. “We have identified diabetes foot problems as one of the main killers of diabetic patients. Early detection and treatment can reduce impact and even amputation could be avoided,” said Dr Tom Babu, Silverline medical director and chief consultant.“India has over 50 million diabetics and foot problems are the most common cause for their hospital admission. One in every six patients, develops a foot ulcer which is the primary cause of lower limb amputation,” he said.Dr A K Bhat, a specialized podiatry/plastic surgeon, said that foot related problems of diabetic patients could be treated effectively by surgical interventions.The clinic provides services of endocrinologists, physicians, diabetes foot nurses, podiatry surgeons,  nutritionist, plastic surgeons, physiotherapists and diabetic nurse educators. “So far, we have achieved close to 100 per cent recovery in our patients which would not have been possible without our well-equipped team,” Dr Tom Babu said.The hospital is organising  a free diabetic foot detection camp on Sunday.
