Delhi ventilator snag: Death toll rises to 5
All the five patients at the Intensive Care Unit of Sushruta Trauma Centre died after the oxygen supply to their ventilator was allegedly stopped.

New Delhi: The death toll has risen to five after another patient died on Wednesday in a Delhi government hospital due to medical negligence after the oxygen supply was cut off while carrying out repair work. All the five patients at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sushruta Trauma Centre died after the oxygen supply to their ventilator was allegedly stopped.

An FIR has been filed in the case. The Delhi government also set up a special panel to probe the mishap and what led to the death.

Hapless relatives of the deceased blamed the hospital authorities for the negligence but the hospital has passed the buck. However, the authorities blamed the contractor for leaving only one untrained person in charge of the oxygen supply instead of the stipulated three people. The hospital authorities also said that only one cylinder, instead of 10 oxygen cylinders, was connected.

Delhi Health Minister AK Walia said, "The incident happened at 6:40 in the morning. The pressure of the oxygen being supplied to the patients was reduced which led to the death." One of the patient's landlord said, "My tenant was fine this morning. I don't know how it happened but I think the hospital was careless with the patients' oxygen supply."

Meanwhile, Delhi Government later in the day announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each to the next of kin of the persons who died in the hospital. Special Secretary in Health department SB Shashank will head the inquiry committee and it has been asked to file the report by Friday.
