As many as 18 people have died in the past two months due to waterlogging in Delhi. Six of the 18 victims were children aged between 3 and 10. The national capital witnessed incessant rainfall leading to severe waterlogging across the city and its adjoining areas.
According to data, 11 people died due to drowning in waterlogged regions, while seven were electrocuted, an India Today report said. The deaths include the three IAS aspirants who died due to drowning in the basement of a coaching center in Delhi’s Old Rajender Nagar.
On Saturday, a seven-year-old boy drowned in a waterlogged park in Rohini’s Sector 20, which was inundated due to the recent rain. The incident happened in the evening while the child was playing in the park. Two teenage boys, both aged 15, drowned in stagnant rainwater in a vacant plot in Delhi’s Prem Nagar area on Saturday.
In another incident, a 13-year-old boy died due to electrocution when he came in contact with an electric pole while playing cricket in the Ranhola area of outer Delhi, police said on Sunday.
In similar incidents, a woman along with her son drowned in a waterlogged drain near Khoda Colony in Delhi’s Ghazipur area, while, a 12-year-old boy died due to electrocution at Bindapur area of Dwarka district. The father of the deceased told the cops that his son got electrocuted while returning back from tuition at 7:00 pm on Wednesday. Two plastic pipes containing disconnected electric cable were found emerging from the ground.
Further, one person was killed in the Subzi Mandi area and three more injured — two in Shastri Park and one in Defence Colony due to building collapse incidents following the incessant rain.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for rainfall in Delhi on Monday, with warnings of thunderstorms and lightning.
