New Delhi: A man, who suffered injuries after being hit by a rashly-driven DTC bus, has been awarded over Rs 1.6 lakh compensation by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT).

The tribunal directed United India Insurance Company Ltd, with which the bus was insured, to pay Rs 1,60,900 as compensation to Rajasthan native Sunil Chaudhary who was grievously injured in the accident in 2013.

"From the testimony of Sunil, coupled with the documents filed on record, it is established that he sustained injuries in a road accident due to rash and negligent driving of DTC bus," MACT presiding officer K S Mohi said, while relying on the FIR, medical report of the victim and other documents.

It also noted that no evidence was brought by the insurance company to show that there was any breach of policy by the Delhi Transport Corporation bus or that its driver was not having valid driving licence.

According to the petition, Sunil, who worked as an assistant manager at Tata Motors' south Delhi workshop, was standing outside his office on the intervening night of September 8-9, 2013, when the DTC bus being driven in a rash and negligent manner suddenly took a turn and hit him.

Due to the forceful impact, he fell down on the road and sustained grievous injuries.

He was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent treatment for nearly a week due to the gravity of injuries suffered by him on his head.

DTC and the driver of the bus denied the contentions of the petition and claimed that it was Sunil's mistake which led to the accident. The insurance company made a monetary offer to the victim for an out of court settlement which he had rejected.
