A Delhi Court on Monday turned down the bail pleas of BRS leader K Kavitha in both the cases registered by probe agencies Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED), related to the Delhi liquor policy case.
Special CBI Judge Kaveri Baweja hearing the case at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court turned down the requests, in yet another setback to the BRS leader ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
The BRS leader was arrested by the central probe agency from her Banjara Hills residence on March 15 amid protests by BRS supporters.
She has been accused of being a key member of the “South Group”, which allegedly paid the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi kickbacks of Rs 100 crore in return for a big share of liquor licenses in the national capital.
The CBI arrested Kavitha on April 11 and she was earlier arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 15 from Hyderabad.
In 2022, an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation alleged that the Delhi Excise Policy of 2021-22 was manipulated to facilitate monopolisation and cartelisation of wholesale and retail liquor trade in Delhi.
According to the CBI and ED, certain persons/ group from South India were benefited in the process and some amount of their profits was given to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which used the same to campaign for Goa assembly elections.
The case was registered under sections of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The ED, however, is separately investigating the money laundering allegations in the case.
