New Delhi: A Delhi Police constable has been seriously injured in the clashes with anti-gangrape protesters at Delhi's India Gate on Sunday. The constable Subhash Tomar has been admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and doctors are battling to save his life.
Tomar was deployed at India Gate to control the crowds protesting against the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student inside a moving bus by six men, all of whom have been arrested.
Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said Subhash Tomar was very serious and may not be able to survive. He said Tomar had been declared brought dead by the doctors but he was revived after examination and medical help, but continues to be very serious and is on life support system. Kumar also added at least 65 Delhi Police officials were injured in the clashes with protesters.
Police used brute force to clear India Gate on Sunday evening after intermittent clashes with them. The crackdown came after some protesters started to indulge in violence, pulled down and burnt several barricades.
Many of the protesters claimed their demonstration was peaceful and accused the police of using unnecessary force. The gangrape survivor also continues be in a critical condition in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.
