PUDUCHERRY: Heavy rains which lashed the Union Territory, on Wednesday, spoiled the plans of many to celebrate Deepavali in a grand manner.The rains, which lasted the entire day, saw water entering houses in a number of places and also left the roads flooded. People staying in areas like Krishna Nagar, Boomiyanpet, Vazhakulam, Vaithikuppam and the areas close to the Lawspet police station had to spend the day with buckets in their hands draining out water that had entered their houses.“We had no option but to drain out the water, manually,” said Muthu, a taxi driver, living opposite the Lawspet police station. He added that most of the residents in the area spent the Deepavali day clearing the water from the houses.Many roads were flooded and drains were overflowing due to the dumped garbage. In Vanur, the banks of a lake breached and water entered the houses situated nearby.The rains also doused the fires of many enthusiastic children who were planning to burst crackers. They were left a disappointed lot as they could not even purchase the crackers due to the heavy rains.However, the people heaved a sigh of relief after some respite from rain by the evening. The overcast conditions remained even as the fireworks finally began.On Thursday, local administration minister N G Pannirselvam inspected the water-logged areas of Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, Ginjee Salai, Natesan Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Rainbow Nagar, MGR Nagar and Boomiyanpet.He was accompanied by A Balasubramanian, director, local admin dept, K T Alagiri, commissioner, Puducherry municipality,and Manoharan, chief engineer, PWD.In terms of clearing the roads, authorities claimed that the blockages of drainage canal at the junction of Boomiyanpet and Villupuram road was removed using a backhoe. Pannirselvam instructed officials of respective areas to undertake relief work immediately.
