Kolkatta: The contingent of around 100 American military officers were welcomed with ?red flags? as they landed in Kolkata on Friday.
CPI-M supporters staged a protest against the Indo-US joint military exercise as two American multi-utility FC10 aircrafts arrived at the Kalaikunda air base in Kolkata.
While Friday saw nearly 500 protestors, the CPI-M has promised to mobilise as many as one-lakh supporters outside the airbase as the Indo-US military exercise gets underway on Monday.
Explaining his party's resistance to the exercise, CPI-M MP Amitava Nandi says that the Indo-US agreement on military co-operation would compromise the country's sovereignty.
"We feel this agreement is against the independent foreign policy which the Government of India has announced in the Common Minimum Programme," Nandi said.
Undeterred by CPI-M's resistance, the American military officers arrived in style.
While CPI-M supporters continue to protest against the exercise, another batch of 150 officers are headed for India along with a fleet of 12 F16 fighter planes.
