CPI-M slams BJP's divisive politics
Slamming the BJP for its divisive politics, CPM said the party's agenda had been "discredited" by wide sections of the people.

New Delhi: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) that supports India's ruling coalition from the outside on Monday slammed what it termed the "divisive politics" of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying its agenda had been "discredited" by wide sections of the people.

The message from the just concluded BJP national executive meet at Lucknow was that the party "has adopted a platform of divisive politics and rank communalism", the CPI-M politburo said in a statement.

The speeches at the session by BJP president Rajnath Singh and other leaders "have highlighted all the issues on the BJP/RSS combine's agenda which have been discarded and find no support among wider sections of the people," the statement added.

Noting that the political resolution harps on "Muslim appeasement" and warns that this could lead to a second partition of India, the politburo said: "The arguments put forth are reminiscent of how the Hindu communal platform stayed away from the national movement for independence and sought to divide it on communal lines."

"In secular India, the rights of minorities have to be assured and the Sachar committee report has only underlined the failings in this regard," it said.

Maintaining that the "results of such a rabid communal platform can be serious", the CPI-M said that "Muslim bating and efforts to foment communal tension can have harmful consequences" and that the BJP "has to be rebuffed on this count and will be held squarely responsible for any disruptive activities".

The record of BJP governments at the centre and the states has "shown the people that a rightwing communal platform is no answer to their problems", the politburo said, adding: "The BJP leadership is unable to realise that the politics and ideology it espouses are no more in tune with the aspirations of the common people, who are more concerned with the issues of livelihood, food, education, health and well-being."
