BHUBANESWAR: The CPI State council on Monday asked the district and block committees to observe December 15 as demand day to press the Centre for implementation of national food security policy. The present policy of the Government is targeted for a group while the CPI is demanding universalisation of the public distribution system, said State secretary of the party Dibakar Nayak.More than six lakh tonnes of foodgrains are stocked in Government godowns and a large quantity of it is rotting due to improper storage. The most vulnerable section of society does not have access to foodgrains stored in the Government godowns due to the faulty policy, he said. While the Government has no control over the market prices of foodgrains, the untamed inflation has made  life of common citizens miserable. The existing policy of the Government is benefiting the middlemen, traders and exporters while the farmers are not getting remunerative price for their produce, he said. ‘’If the Centre can provide about Rs 4 lakh crore tax rebate to big industrial houses every year, there should not be any problem to give food subsidy to the tune of Rs 90,000 crore,’’ he reasoned. The State secretariat of the CPI which met here on Sunday discussed the issue and decided to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister. The meeting also discussed the impending election to the three-tier panchayati raj institutions. The district units of the party were asked to complete the preparatory works for the panchayat elections by December 31.
