Ahmedabad: A Gujarat sessions court will decide on Tuesday on the bail application of suspended Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjeev Bhatt, who was arrested on September 30. The court has sent a notice to the Gujarat government and the state Director General of Police.
Bhatt was arrested in Gandhinagar on charges of fabricating evidence and wrongful confinement.
The arrest came after police constable KD Pant alleged that Bhatt had forced him to file a false affidavit against Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
The suspended IPS officer had accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi of chairing a meeting on February 27, 2002 after the Godhra train carnage and allegedly asked the police to go slow against rioters.
On Sunday, Bhatt got a reprieve when a court rejected an application seeking his police remand and was sent to judicial custody.
However, Pant has claimed that he was in Mumbai on the day Modi allegedly chaired the February 27, 2002 meeting.
"I was under no pressure whatsoever to file a complaint against Sanjeev Bhatt. I did not accompany Bhatt to that meeting. I had been to Mumbai for the visa work of my nephews," Pant said.
On being asked about the change in his statement, Pant said that he mentioned whatever happened with him in the FIR.
Pant claimed that he was rewarded for his work during the Godhra riots and he said that the appreciation was for the work he did in connection with the VIP movements during that time.
"That reward was for the work I did concerning VIP movements during the riots. It was not for that particular date," Pant said.
Bhatt is in judicial custody at the Sabarmati Jail after a local court dismissed the Gujarat police's request for extension of his custody.
