BANGALORE: :The Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST) is planning to start a course in wood designing. “The idea is primarily to create awareness among the public about creative application of wood,” said an official from the IWST.Speaking to Express, he said,“The concept is still at its initial stages. As per the plan, the course will be designed for students who have completed their plus two. Basic knowledge about the wood and wood based industry will form part of the course. The courses, one extending for one year and the other for two years, are on the plan.”“The IWST will also have a tie-up with wood-based industries so that once the students are done with the course, they can be placed in these wood-based industries” he added. The idea of a course in wood designing was also outlined during the design event on the theme “Wood of Future: Retrospectives and prospects of creative applications of wood” held at the Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST) on Tuesday.Speaking during the event SC Joshi, Director, IWST, said that bringing about awareness in creative application of wood can be done by roping in more students and collaborating with wood-based industries. Research on wood design is being conducted at the IWST but they hardly reach the wood industries. He laid stress on public private partnership (PPP) model to take forward the idea. Project Director, TYCKA Design Private Limited MS Shanavas, said,“With the availability of alternative designs of steel and aluminium, wood product designing is becoming challenging. There is a need to develop a strategy where IWST can disseminate knowledge to common wood designers.”
