Karachi: In a barbaric incident, a couple was tied to a tree and stoned to death by relatives immediately after being caught together in a remote Pakistani village, police said on Tuesday.

Angry at their relationship, relatives tied Ghulam Nabi and Elahi Sen to a tree and hurled bricks at them from all sides killing them instantly.

The incident took place in Donga Bonga block close to the Pakistan-India border near Rahim Yar Khan in central Punjab province.

"Ghulam Nabi was a relative of one of the accused Akhtar Hussain and was said to have developed illicit relations with one of his female relatives, Elahi Sen," District Police Officer Zafar Bokhari told PTI.

"The people who stoned them to death claim they caught the man and woman red handed late Sunday night and killed them immediately afterwards," Bokhari added.

"It was a tragic incident," he added. Police have registered a double murder case against five persons, Akhtar Hussain, Maqbool Ahmed, Mohammad Aslam, Mohammad Ashraf and Mohammad Bota.

Honour killings are common in Pakistan specially in southern Punjab where any relation outside marriage is frowned upon and invites extreme action from relatives.
