KOCHI: The confusion over the vacation break in Mahatma Gandhi University has been cleared with the government endorsing the Mahatma Gandhi University Ordinance 2011, which includes semester terms, vacations and holidays.Almost all the teachers of the government colleges affiliated with the M G University were confused as they did not get any order from the Department of Collegiate Education.According to the Mahatma Gandhi University Ordinance 2011, the academic year for all colleges affiliated to the university and educational institutions and departments maintained by the university will now begin on June 1 each year and end on May 31 the next year. The academic year will consist of two semesters with six months duration. Only exception would be the BEd programme. The duration of semesters one, three and five is from June to November and two, four and six from December to May. The semester breaks are in November and May every year. The ordinance also notes that a period, not exceeding 15 days, will be allowed for the Onam and Christmas holidays. However, these holidays would not be treated as vacation. Each semester will be having a minimum of 450 contact hours that would be distributed over 90 working days, inclusive of examination days. The principals of colleges affiliated to the university may fix the working days and holidays subject to the provisions contained in the ordinance and in accordance with the academic calendar of the university.The decision to change the vacation period is part of the implementation of the regulations under the choice-based credit semester and grading scheme in the affiliated colleges.
