Muzaffarnagar: Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities Wajahat Habibullah has said that communal tensions are on the rise across India. He was at Muzaffarnagar on a visit after the riots in the area claimed 48 lives.
When asked if the National Commission of Minorities has let down the Muslims in Uttar Pradesh, Wajahat said, "If such an incident happens it is obviously a failure of the administration and as a result that of the state and Centre."
"Such things do not happen only in UP. We have had recent communal clashes in Indore, Rajasthan and Mumbai," he added.
Meanewhile, in an embarrassment for the Uttar Pradesh government, a day after arrest warrants were issued against 24 politicians in the Muzaffarnagar riots case, not even a single MLA or MP has been taken into custody.
Arrest warrants were issued against several UP politicians including Sangeet Som, BJP MLA Bhartentu Singh, Bharatiya Kisan Union leaders Rakesh Tikait and Naresh Tikait, BSP MP Kadir Rana, BSP MLA Noor Saleen Rana, BSP MLA Jameel Ahmed, Congress leader Saidujama and 16 other people.
