KOLLAM: Coirfed has received a record Rs 2 crore order for Coir Geo Textiles from various local self-government institutions, Coirfed president S L Sajikumar said. Coirfed had received orders worth Rs 40 lakh during the previous financial year. The geo textiles would be used by the local bodies for projects such as preventing soil erosion and water shed management implemented under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act(NREGA), he said. S L Sajikumar said that Coirfed was able to achieve this all-time record through the Green Initiative campaign for popularising geo textiles, which kicked off last December. As part of the campaign, workshops were held for local body representatives from Kollam, Malappuram, Wayanad and Thrissur districts. Green Coordinators are also working in all districts to promote geo-textiles. Through the implementation of coir geo textile projects, it is expected that the local bodies would be able to ensure at least Rs 3 crore worth working days for beneficiaries of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. The district level figures show that Pathanamthitta will benefit the most from the project, Sajikumar said.
