RAJAHMUNDRY/ELURU: Ignoring the warning of police, cock fights were organised in East and West Godavari districts for the third consecutive day on Monday as part of Sankranti celebrations. Crores of rupees in the form of bettings changed hands.Some ruling Congress MLAs and political leaders inaugurated the cock fights claiming that it is a tradition.In Amalapuram, a minister is said to have orally instructed the police not to take any action against the organisers of cock fights. Cock fights were organised at I Polavaram, Muramalla, Godi, Uppalaguptam, Razole, Malikipuram, Samalkot, Peddapuram and many other places in East Godavari district.In West Godavari district, the cock fights were held at Bhimavaram, Undi, Yelamanchili, Chintalapudi, Denduluru and other places. In Nidadavolu, the organisers of cock fights printed invitations and issued entry passes.Cine director V Vinayak, actor Babu Mohan and several other film personalities, former minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav and MLAs witnessed the cock fights.The cock which died in the fight, fetched a price ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 to the organisers.According to an estimate, the total betting amount that changed hands in West Godavari was Rs 200 crore and Rs 150 crore in East Godavari district.Punish MLAs involved in cock fights: PWSVijayawada: Public Welfare Society (PWS) president B Sathya Babu on Monday said the police utterly failed in curbing cock fights and bettings during Sankranti celebrations.He denounced the participation of MLAs and ministers in cock fights on the pretext of encouraging our tradition. He demanded that the government impose a ban on cock fights and initiate action against the MLAs and political leaders who took part in the cock fights.
