Coastal security groups have been put on high security alert following the tension in Sri Lanka.

Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu): Coastal security groups have been put on high alert following the tension in Sri Lanka. They have been asked to check all vehicles passing through the various check-posts.

According to the police officials, petrol bunks would be monitored and additional armed personnel would be deployed at the check posts.

The coastguards and fishermen have been asked to inform the police about any movement of refugees in the mid-sea.

Intelligence Bureau officials, Military intelligence and the State Intelligence have also been put on high alert and directed to watch the situation and developments in Sri Lanka on an hourly basis.

The securities around the Mandapam refugee camp, Dhanushkodi and the islands off Ramanathapuram district have been strengthened. The Coastguard Hovercraft would do intensive patrolling round the clock. The Naval helicopters too have intensified their surveillance.

The officials said that till late Wednesday evening, there was no sign of refugees fleeing the island. But they expected number of people to flee in the coming days.

The DIG of Police Nandabalan and Superintendent K Rajendran have visited Arichalmunai, Moonram Chattiram and other sensitive coastal areas to review the security measures.
