RAICHUR: The Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS), which is expected to run its eight units to generate 40 million units per day, is generating only 12 to 15 million units, mainly due to the coal linkage problem. The station needs at least eight rakes of coal per day but it is actually getting only four to five rakes per day.As of date, the station has coal stocks sufficient only for 10 days.To combat this problem, authorities have been running only units 1, 4 and 5.They claim that unit 3 has been kept only for annual maintenance and would be ready for synchronisation by December. However, units 2, 3, 6 and 7 are ready for generation.According to Executive Director of RTPS P Bhaskar, units 2, 3, 6 and 7 will be ready for generation once the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) gives the green signal.Because the daily demand for power has decreased in the centre, the SLDC has asked RTPS to minimize generation, saying that hydel power projects’ generation was at its optimal level with lesser production cost.Compared to hydel plants, power production cost in RTPS is costlier by `3 to `4.Though RTPS authorities claim that its four units had been closed down on the direction of SLDC, reliable sources say that the units were actually closed down due to a shortage of coal.Unit eight was facing a technical problem and the authorities have been in touch with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) to set it right.
