PUDUCHERRY: About 40 women, who had gathered on the Puducherry beach for an event to observe the VII anniversary of the December 26 Tsunami, on Monday, left in protest after they were made to wait for about two hours for the arrival of Chief Minister N Ranagasamy, who was to pay floral tributes to a banner erected for this purpose. While the event, organised by a number of fishermen organisations, was slated to begin at 9 am, the Chief Minister failed to arrive even at 11 am. At this point, a number of women belonging to the fishing communities, who had gathered for the event, decided to leave protesting the “insensitivity” shown to them.Others victims of the CM’s delay were Speaker Sabapathy, Ministers Rajavelu and Thiagarajan who were found waiting for about one hour for the arrival of Rangasamy, who finally reached the spot at 11.10 am.Though the event was not a government-sponsored one, organisers said that it had become a convention for the Chief Minister of the Union Territory to pay tributes to the victims at this annual event organised by the fishing community. This incident follows a similar one on Saturday when a number of mentally challenged children were made to wait for three hours for the arrival of N Rangasamy at an event organised by a parents association of mentally challenged persons.
