THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The future of the project planned by the city authorities to distribute ID cards to the autorickshaw drivers in the city, already in muddled waters, got murkier on Sunday after the Deputy Mayor dropped a bombshell that the project was yet to receive the nod of the City Corporation Council. He has said this, even as the police have gone ahead with the project overcoming resistance and printing over 3,000 ID cards. Deputy Mayor G Happykumar told City Express that, ‘’a proposal for the project is yet to be presented before the council for approval.’’ ‘’The scheme proposed to be implemented on a budget of ` 15 lakh would be presented before the council only after the Traffic Advisory Committee arrives at a consensus regarding the implementation, eliminating all anomalies,’’ he said. He also said that the project was announced about five months ago soon after the idea was conceived. Several talks were also held in this regard. But further steps could not be taken as a dispute arose between the motor workers’ unions and the City Police over the authority of screening and distributing the application forms for the ID cards. ‘’The police are showing an undue haste in the matter. If the police proceed with the project without the approval of the council, it would invite legal obstacles,’’ the Deputy Mayor added. Meanwhile, a senior police officer attached to the City Police said that the project was being delayed as the left-oriented workers’ unions were influencing the Corporation authorities led by the LDF. ‘’The lethargy of the Corporation authorities is also delaying the project. The Mayor is so busy attending inaugurations so that our requests to convene a meeting for a solution has fallen on deaf ears,’’ said the officer.
