KOCHI: The stretch of Chittoor road connecting M G Road and the Kaloor-Kathrikadavu road is still a mess even as the the demolition of the side bay of the North Railway Overbridge (ROB) began on Sunday.Although the authorities concerned rely on Chittoor road to bring down the heightened traffic congestion expected in the coming days, the condition of the road might result in the opposite. With metal heaped up on one side of the road and drainage work in progress on the other, the already-narrow road is just wide enough to allow one vehicle to pass through at a time. Moreover, the accumulated metal has spewed across the road posing a threat to two-wheelers. Another problem is that those who take to alleyways and pocket-roads as short cuts to their destination might end up creating mini-traffic blocks as these roads are neither tarred nor broad enough to allow two vehicles to pass side by side. Anyhow, the repair works of the roads chosen for the re-routing of traffic, including the Thammanam-Pulleppady road, have been completed. Since a Sunday had been chosen to begin the north ROB demolition, the roads expected to bear the crunch of traffic were comparatively free as very few vehicles were plying. “The traffic was very light since it was a holiday. The real traffic snarls will begin only on Monday when people will be rushing to and from work,” said a policeman who was managing traffic at the Pullepady bridge.
