Chennai: Midnight bid to rob bank fails
After a failed attempt to open the vault, the burglar left the building using the opening he had used to sneak in.

CHENNAI: A midnight heist was attempted at the branch of a nationalised bank in Pallikaranai on Friday.  Police said that Punjab National Bank’s manager Ravi went to open the bank on Velachery main road near a private engineering college at 8.40am. Inside, he noticed that the grill of one of the windows had been broken. He immediately alerted the police, who on inspection came to a conclusion that it was a robbery attempt. They said that the burglar had broken the glass of a window on the right side of the building. He cut open part of the grill to gain entry and tried in vain to open the safety vaults. After a failed attempt to open the vault, the burglar left the building using the opening he had used to sneak in.Ravi said that the branch had been running for the past six years and they have a huge clientele of students from the nearby private  engineering college and from the neighbourhood. The bank had no security guards but had surveillance cameras. Though the cameras have captured an image of the burglar, it was not clear as all the lights have been switched off , police said.“We have six to seven CCTV cameras... Police have recovered a blade used to cut the grill,” the manager said.Although different in modus operandi, the incident brings to memory the two infamous bank heists in the southern suburbs in January and February. Subsequently, the police gunned down five suspects, in Velachery.
