Chennai: A gangster allegedly involved in several murders in the city was shot dead in an encounter on Wednesday morning.
Nagoor Meeran was also suspected to be the prime accused in the murder of an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) functionary M R Ravi.
The police claimed the shoot-out to be an 'act of self-defence'.
Initial reports said that Meeran was shot dead when he made a bid to escape the police team which surrounded him.
"While attempting to arrest Meeran, he hurled a country bomb and also inflicted an injury on an Inspector's chest with a sickle," City Police Commissioner Lethika Saran reported.
"A sub-inspector fired at him in self-defence, killing him on the spot. An RDO inquiry has been sought into the incident," she added.
Saran said that based on a tip-off, the police surrounded Meeran, who was travelling on a two-wheeler around 0445 hrs (IST) near Madhanankuppam road in Korattur.
One of Meeran's associates and another prime accused in the Ravi murder case, had been arrested earlier and six others had surrendered recently.
