THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Beans burn. If you are planning to have beans in your menu one of these days, better have a look at the price first. The price of beans has shot up by Rs 50 per kilo over the past few weeks. On Friday, beans were being sold at Rs 80 a kilo. Two weeks ago, the price had stood at a relatively paltry Rs 30, vendors said.In fact, the price has shot up by Rs 10 in just a week, said Rajan P Nair, a vendor at the Connemara Market, Palayam. ‘’Beans, like most other vegetables, come from Tamil Nadu. Consignments have decreased, leading to the rise in prices,’’ said Anil Kumar, of C Chandran Wholesale and Retail Merchants, Connemara Market.A number of other vegetables also have entered the ‘red’ zone, according to merchants. Carrot, which cost Rs 20 a kilo two weeks ago, is now priced at Rs 35. Cabbage also has had a similar ‘fate,’ merchants said. Cabbage was sold at Rs 35 a kilo on Friday, a hike of Rs 15. Items that could be termed cheap include lady’s finger, green chillies and drum stick.
