Suburban Chennaities who use public transport for commuting felt the brunt of yesterday’s bandh, as they put in long hours to reach their destinations .
Maheshwari who lives at Vinayakapuram in Redhills, was waiting in the bus stand from 8.30am. She said, “After waiting for little more than half an hour, as no city bus came in, I went back home and called office, thinking i will take leave. But my boss said,I had to come to finish some important work.So I came back to the bus stand and managed to get into a moffzil bus and reached CMBT bus stand in Koyembeddu”
From Koyembeddu she took another bus to Guindy and then another local bus to reach her office at Lake view Road in Kottur. Maheshwari said, “ By the time I reached office it was past 12, and went on to quickly finish work, so that i can leave early given the uncertain bus situation.”
Evening though she left her work place by 3.30 pm, by the time when she reached home it was 7:30 pm.
Maheshwari said, “ It was a long day for people like us , who live in the suburbs who travel into the city for work everyday.”
Maheshwari was also orthopaedically challenged, who was forced suffer the inconvenience caused by the bandh.
Vigneshwaran, a second year M Com student of Pachiappa’s college, who lives in J B Estate in Avadi, commutes by bus. He said, “I was in the bus stand at 7 am Due to the bandh I had to wait for more than half an hour to get a bus to reach Avadi.”
From Avadi, as there were few buses, and the rush was heavy, he with difficulty managed to hop into a bus and reach his college at 9: 45 am. Similar is the story of Selvi who lives in Pammal . She started for work at 8 am and managed to reach office after shifting 3 buses at 12.10 pm. Selvi said, “It was a tough day, for people who live far way like us. Bandh’s affecting public transport is not a great idea. Who is suffering in the end? it is only the people like us.”
