New Delhi: The Centre has made a veiled attack on the controversial action of Uttar Pradesh minister Mohammad Yaqoob Qureshi for announcing a Rs 51 crore reward for the head of Danish cartoonist, whose caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad have triggered protests from Muslims across the world.
"People holding constitutional posts should maintain restraint," Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi said when asked to comment on the bounty announced by the
Uttar Pradesh minister.
When asked to comment on the paintings of M F Hussain which have hurt the Hindu community, the minister said the
painter has already apologised for his conduct.
Pressed specifically for a comment on the matter, he said: "We don't encourage it, we denounce it."
The government also dismissed reports it had failed to express concern over the cartoon row.
Dasmunsi, also the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had written to the Danish authorities way back in December.
"What can I do if someone has decided not to see (what government is doing on the matter)," he shot back when asked over the Left's criticism of the government's slow reaction on the issue.
