CHENNAI: As part of their 175th anniversary celebrations, the Madras Christian College (MCC), in association with the United Board for Christian Higher Education, launched a ‘Centre for Peace Studies’ on Friday. To cultivate a culture of peace through classroom discussions, seminars and workshops, the centre offers help on an inter-institutional basis. They would also be seeking to foster a climate of peace and understanding through action in the student community. Introducing the Centre for Peace Studies, Dr K Joshua, Associate Professor of Philosophy, MCC, said, “At no other point in history has there been a need for peace and peace studies as there is now. There are a myriad of problems such as racial, religion, domestic and gender based violence. The centre will look for new dimensions of peace.”He also said that the centre is in the process of developing course materials based on a multi-disciplinary approach, for similar studies in other institutions. Inaugurating the centre, Dr Nancy E Chapman, President of the United Board said, “The challenge of combating such issues takes deep commitment and thoughtful practise. We are glad the MCC is taking initiatives to be a powerful exponent of peace.” Principal of MCC Dr RW Alexander Jesudasan; Bursar C Sundaraj; Director of Institute for Advanced Christian Studies Rev Dr CSE Ross; Chaplain of MCC Rev Dr VM Spurgeon and Vice President for Programs of United Board Dr Betty Cernol McCann were also present on the occasion.
