THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Addressing the concern of the friends and relatives of inmates of Central Prison at Poojappura, the Prisons authorities have decided to construct a well-furnished waiting area at the prison. The proposal for the waiting area was put forward by Santhosh Kumar, the Superintendent of District Prison, during the three-day national seminar on ‘Corrective Administration’, which is going on at the State Institute of Corrective Administration here. In his presentation, Santhosh Kumar pointed out that at present, the waiting area for visitors at the prison was no good. There were not even good chairs for them to sit while they waited for the authorities to process their applications and sent message to the respective blocks to bring out the intended inmates. It was undesirable of the authorities to treat the visitors in such a bad manner, said the Superintendent. Prisons ADGP Alexander Jacob, who was present at the seminar, immediately gave out orders to the prison staff to commence the preparations for the construction, while the ADGP himself would get an order from the State Government in this regard. The ADGP, who also inaugurated the seminar, said that prison staff should take care not to handcuff students and other youngsters who are arrested on charges of agitations. Any prison staff who was seen handcuffing students would face disciplinary action, said the ADGP. The superintendents of various prisons in the state presented papers of their respective prisons and the progress of the welfare activities undertaken there, at the function.
