VELLORE: Work on the `1,295 crore Combined Drinking Water Scheme, which involves the sourcing of drinking water from the Chekkanur barrage located downstream from the Mettur dam (Stanley reservoir) across the Cauvery River, has begun. The project will be carried out in three stages and will cater to the needs of 25 lakh people in the district. The administrative sanction for this scheme was given by the State in 2010. Collector Ajay Yadav, who inspected the excavation done to build a sump that can store six lakh litres of water, said that the project will supply 215 million litres of water per day to 11 municipalities (Tirupattur, Jolarpet, Vaniyambadi, Ambur, Pernambut, Gudiyattam, Melvisharam, Arcot, Ranipet, Wallajah and Arakonam), 5 town panchayats (Natrampalli, Udeyendram, alangayam, Odugathru and Pallikonda) and 944 habitations (142 in Jolarpet union, 108 in Alangayam, 39 in Kandili, 18 in Tirupattur, 18 in KV Kuppam, 28 in Gudiyattam, 184 in Katpadi, 107 in Madanur, 51 in Anaicut, 102 in Vellore, 83 in Kaniyambadi, 114 in Wallajah) along the Palar River, besides catering to the needs of Vellore corporation. While the people of Vellore corporation will receive 135 litres per day (LPD), those in municipalities will get 90 LPD, the town panchayats will receive 70 LPD and rural habitations will get 40 LPD when the project is implemented by the end of 2014.The construction division of Larsen & Toubro has bagged the contract for the three stages or packages in which work will be carried out. The pumped water will reach Kadathur in Dharmapuri district, from where it will flow towards Arakonam municipality.
