The state government on Wednesday wrote to the Centre reiterating its earlier stand that it cannot release water to Tamil Nadu as directed by the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) since there is deficit rainfall in the state.
In a reply to the Centre’s letter asking it to obey the September 19 CRA order, the state government reportedly expressed its inability to comply with the CRA direction to release 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day till October 15.
The state government also said that it had filed a review petition before the CRA to reconsider its direction and any decision on releasing water would be taken only after the disposal of the petition.
Meanwhile, sources in the state government hinted that the government may approach the Supreme Court if the CRA turns down its request.
Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar told reporters in Delhi on Wednesday that the state government had received a letter from the Centre asking it to honour the CRA direction but the state cannot release water as there is no sufficient water in its reservoirs.
He also dismissed the reports of legal experts representing Karnataka being unhappy over state government’s decision to walk out of the CRA meet as baseless.
“Nobody, including Fali Nariman expressed disappointment or displeasure over our stand. I have been in constant touch with them,” Shettar said.
Shettar will be meeting the legal team on Thursday afternoon in Delhi to discuss the state’s next course of legal action.
