VELLORE: The Numismatic and Philatelic Association of Vellore Fort has suggested ways to popularise the hobby among young students. At the two-day philatelic exhibition that took place in Vellore on January 5 and 6, where over 5,000 stamps of more than 30 philatelists were displayed, secretary of Numismatic and Philatelic Association of Vellore Fort, Tamil Vanan, said, “Philately as a hobby is important as the habit of collecting stamps increases one’s concentration and analysing power. It also enhances general knowledge. Philately can be taught in special classes or even added as a chapter in history lessons.”The secretary had put on display stamps on Mother Theresa. He said, “About 198 countries have stamps on Mother Theresa. Even Mahatma Gandhi comes second to her, as only 158 countries have made stamps on him.” Responding to allegations that only the wealthy can collect foreign and old stamps, he said that it is true that stamps have been auctioned for more than antiques and diamonds. Old stamps have been valued at up to `15 crore in India, and auctioned for over 5 million internationally. He also admitted that people collect stamps as an investment. He said, even common people can become philatelists as local stamps can be exchanged for foreign stamps. With social networks, reaching out to people with similar interests has become easy. “In the old days, we would also make pen friends,” said senior philatelist from Chennai PS Seshadri, adding, South India Philatelic Association President, Balakrishna Doss said, “Parents and educational institutions can play a vital role in cultivating the habit among children.”
