Lucknow: BSP MLA Mukhtar Ansari suffered a heart attack inside Banda jail on Tuesday.
Sources said Ansari, the MLA from Mau in Uttar Pradesh, suffered heart attack minutes after he drank his morning tea in Banda jail. The gangster-turned-politician was taken to the district hospital and later to PGI Lucknow. His condition is stated to be critical.
Sources said Ansari’s wife Afsa who had gone to meet him in the hospital after getting the news of the heart attack also suffered a heart attack.
As per the doctors of district hospital in Banda, Ansari was suffering from several ailments that included high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels and bronchitis.
Arvind Kumar, Principal Secretary (Home), said, "The District Magistrate and SSP Banda has been asked to prepare a report and the best medical assistance will be provided to Mukhtar Ansari."
About reports in a section of media that Ansari's wife too suffered a heart attack, Kumar said he cannot confirm it immediately.
Ansari’s family members alleged that he was poisoned. Sources said jail authorities will conduct an inquiry into the matter.
