BANGALORE :Inaugurating a two-day national consultation on universalising social security for unorganised labour on Thursday, R K A Subramanya, former Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Labour and Employment, stressed on the need of bringing unorganised labour under the Social Security Act 2008.He said, “The Social Security Act is not being implemented properly. The unorganised labour sector which constitutes about 80 percent of the labourers are migratory and they are not covered neither under the Trade Union Act nor the Social Security Act. The rules should be universal, even the unorganised labourers should be provided with food security, health, family security and old age pension.”Meanwhile, B N Som, Secretary General, Social Security Association of India, also pointed that the social security measures should not just be confined to general provisions. He said, “The measures should also consider the minimum requirements of labour like the food, health, family and pension security.”The consultation organised by the National Centre for Labour (NCL), an apex body of independent unorganised labour organisations, had labour representatives from about 10 states which included Karnataka, Punjab, Jharkhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh among others. The consultation will be on till Friday.
