BANGALORE: Closely modelled on the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRCL) rail system, Reach 1 , (M G Road to Byppanahalli), covering the 6.7 km long stretch, is now ready ply. While the State Government and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) are awaiting an official date of inauguration from the Prime Minister’s office, the 13-minute -and-16 -second long ride from M G Road to Byappanahalli is ready to ply 1,000 people in a 3 coach train. Reach 1, BMRCL’s first operational metro route, has six stations, with the trains scheduled to stop at each station for about 30 seconds to help commuters alight or board the train. With continuous announcements warning the passengers on the dangers of ‘closing doors’ or the tracks (the 3rd rail adjacent to the tracks is energized with 750 V DC), metro has made enough provisions for a safe ride.D K Singh, ex-commissioner of Rail Safety, in his report, has recommended a 10 per cent reduction in the maximum speed of the train because of many sharp curves on the route. BMRCL has made other safety provisions which include emergency button boxes at stations and ‘walk way’ between two stations. All details about ticketing including facilities for recharge of smart cards are available at all the six stations. The mode of entry and exit in the stations is based on the model adopted by Delhi Metro and it involves placing or depositing the tokens at the entry or exit gates. CCTV cameras will monitor all parts of the station starting from entry gates to escalators to platforms. Trained by DMRCL, 96 train operators and station masters will be in charge of Reach 1 post its inauguration.
