NAMAKKAL: A 5-year-old boy died after he fell through an open door of aschool van on Wednesday evening. The van driver was arrested in this connection on Thursday.Police sources said S Kavin, son of Sivaraj, a resident of Pilipakottai near Rasipuram, was a Class I student of a matriculation school in Sampalipudhur. The boy was on his way home in the school van, along with another student, on Wednesday evening when the mishap occurred. As they neared P Kanavaipatti, the door of the van flung open and Kavin fell out. However, instead of pullingover immediately — even as the other student in the van screamed — driver KDuraisamy reportedly paid no heed.Kavin’s relatives, including mother Selvi, and other villagers rushed to the spot and found Kavin lying dead on the road at P Kanavaipatti near Rasipuram.The agitated public took the body to the Mettala Main Road, staged a protestagainst the apathetic behaviour of the van driver and demanded actionagainst him and the negligent school authorities, said sources.The sudden road blockade held up traffic for a few hours.The crowd dispersed after police officials, including Deputy Superintendentof Police Tamilselvan and Inspector Anburaj, promised to taken action against those responsible for the mishap.The Oilpatti police registered a case under sections 279 and 304(a) ofthe IPC and arrested Duraisamy on Thursday, Anburaj said. They wereholding further inquiries. A relative of Kavin alleged that the school wasequally responsible for the boy’s death. He pointed out that if the school hadsent a helper with the children in the van, the tragedy could have beenavoided.
