New Delhi: Two-time world champion M C Marykom was awarded the Padmashree in the same year as tennis sensation Sania Mirza but the boxer hardly gets a mention among the contributors to Indian sports – and that remains her biggest grouse.
"It really feels bad that people talk about Sania Mirza despite her falling rankings. What's the difference between me and her?" Marykom said.
"In fact, she is 69th ranked and I have won the world championships twice but I get no mention among those contributing towards Indian sports. Sometimes I really feel like crying," the Manipuri boxer said.
Marykom said she understood that sponsors get money mainly from tennis and cricket but insisted her achievements were no less.
"I feel bad when I get local sport kits. We deserve better kits from companies like Adidas and Nike," she said.
Marykom also said that she had not been handed over any list of banned medicines as announced by the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation Secretary General Col PKM Raja.
"I have not been given any list of banned medicines. I am taking only vitamin and iron tablets prescribed by a SAI doctor," she said.
Col Raja said all the boxers were aware of banned drugs and random dope tests would be conducted during the fourth Women's World Boxing championships to be held in New Delhi from November 18 to 24.
