Bombs hurled at Oil Refinery site office

PARADIP: Tension prevailed at the oil refinery project site of IOCL after some activists of Biju Workers Union (BWU) hurled bombs at the office of a contract agency on Thursday demanding jobs in the ongoing work.Sources said IOCL has pressed into service a contract agency _ Furnace Construction of India Pvt Ltd _ to construct the furnace of the oil refinery project here. Some local youths demanded that they be engaged in the ongoing construction work. They have threatened the company of dire consequences if not given jobs.Earlier, the construction agency had made a oral agreement with BWU, according to which the union would provide all facilities, including protection, and in return they would be employed in the work. As per the agreement, the activists of BWU supplied drinking water and protection to expedite the construction work.Meanwhile, a splinter group in BWU  demanded work in the refinery project. The agency refused saying they would be given jobs provided they get a signed recommendation from the authority of BWU.Frustrated, rebel BWU activists hurled two bombs at the site office and security office of the construction agency damaging the structures. Deputy General Manager, FCIL, RK Singh said, “We have given jobs to five persons of BWU to expedite work”. An FIR has been lodged with the Paradip police, he added. Local police nabbed five persons for hurling bombs.Union leader Pitamber Tarai clarified that those who hurled bombs have no connection with BWU. He has urged police to take action against them for terrorising the contract agency in the name of BWU.Paradip police station IIC Anil Mishra said a case had been registered and five persons detained for interrogation.
