BANGALORE: Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Congress leaders are hoping to bag the prestigious Koppal Assembly seat. The counting of votes will be taken up tomorrow and the result is expected before noon. The bypoll as held following the resignation to the Assembly seat by sitting JD(S) member Karadi Sanganna who had crossed over to the ruling BJP in its Operation Kamala exercise.An estimated 72 per cent of about 1.88 lakh electorate cast their votes on Monday. While the ruling BJP have fielded Karadi Sanganna as its candidate, Congress nominated former MLA Basavaraj Hitnal while Pradeepgowda Patil is the JD(S) nominee.The counting would be taken up tomorrow in Koppal and a victory would prove as a morale booster to the Congress which has lost almost all the Assembly seats for which bypolls were held after the BJP came to power in 2008.The BJP also has its stake high as the election would also exhibit the popularity of the former CM B S Yeddyurappa. Expressing confidence on the victory of party candidate Basavaraj Hitnal, KPCC president Dr G Parameshwar said that the Koppal Assembly seat would provide a new lease of life to the party.
