Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal candidate and Odia flim actor Anubhab Mohanty was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

"Mohanty has been elected unopposed as there is no other candidate in the fray," Odisha Legislative Assembly secretary Amiya Kumar Sarangi, who is also the returning officer, said.

Though two persons - Shyam Babu Subudhi and Ganeswar Mishra - had filed their nomination papers, they were rejected on June 10 since they did not have the requisite number of proposers.

With Mohanty's election to the Rajya Sabha, the BJD's strength in the Upper House increased to five while two more seats still remained vacant.
