New Delhi: There have been several firsts in the eight season of Bigg Boss. From sexual misconduct to partying with celebrity friends inside the house, this season has seen it all.
In spite of the usual controversies, fights and events, this season of 'Bigg Boss' seems to be a rather 'mild' compared to its previous seasons.
While the level of spontaneity within the show is always debated and whether the entire show is staged is something that critics have always loved to delve upon, there have been instances in this season which have made us viewers wonder whether the show is scripted and trying desperately to create a furor over little, petty issues.
The recent task inside the 'Bigg Boss' house had contestants inviting their celebrity friends for a house party. The list of guests had to be screened first by the captain of the house, Karishma Tanna and post her approval, each housemate had to personally call and invite their guests. While non celebrities and ex Bigg Boss contestants like Sambhavna Seth, Rahul Mahajan, Kashmera Shah made it to the list, Tanna debated over the celebrity status of supermodel Jesse Randhawa.
Interestingly, it was Gautam Gulati who invited Rahul Mahajan to the party and not his ex wife and current Bigg Boss contestant Dimpy Ganguly. Gautam later told Dimpy how he had spoken to Rahul twice and by that virtue he became eligible to be a guest on the party. Dimpy, on her part, appeared to be mildly surprised, just the right amount for the camera.
As guests started coming inside the house for the party, Rahul Mahajan made a late entry and still managed to get the maximum footage inside the house. I was more keen on watching comedian Suresh Menon do stand up inside the house or maybe even watch RJ Malishka dance on top of the table. But the editors of the show clearly had a different agenda for this episode- to rekindle Dimpy and Rahul Mahajan's marriage post divorce.
Dimpy, who is now settled in Dubai, was the official waitress of the party and every time Rahul Mahajan spoke, laughed or even coughed, the camera would pan on Dimpy's face for a reaction. While the former couple seemed more than normal throughout the episode, makers of the show zoomed in and out of their faces to tweak out some reaction.
I have a sneaky feeling that Mahajan was asked by the makers to strip just to make the party more 'happening'. Much to everyone's surprise and dismay, Mahajan dived into the pool (He was the only one to do so) perhaps hoping to increase the TRP ratings of the show.
By the end of it, the episode appeared more to be Rahul Mahajan special episode than a party with outsiders mingling with the contestants of the house. There were other celebrities on the show who were completely sidelined. Some were not even introduced, they were just seen in the background. While the guests were leaving, the camera only focused on the couple, and fortunately for the makers, this time round Dimpy did react. She teared up and told her ex husband, "I am really glad to see you" and I'm sure, the entire production unit must have collectively sighed in relief.
Unlike previous seasons, this season of the Bigg Boss has been quite subdued. Sure, there have been customary revolts within the house, contestants have tried to escape the house, fought over issues- but overall they have been peaceful- the little violence that they did resort to looked staged and was conveniently forgotten and made fun of later. Nothing is scandalous inside the house, nothing shocks the viewers anymore. And that perhaps has made makers resort to such tactics to gain the falling TRPs. So they have made housemates kiss in front of the camera, they have tried to rekindle romance between two people who have clearly moved on in life.
They may be making the right noises inside the house to grab the attention but with the lack of contestants like Imaan Siddiqui, Dolly Bindra and Pooja Misra this season, who used the platform to gain maximum publicity, the popular reality show really needs to come up with new tricks to engage its viewers.
