Bengaluru: Mohammad Nalapad, the notorious son of Congress MLA NA Harris, is in the news again for all the wrong reasons. This time, he has been accused of rash driving and ramming his Bentley into a motorbike and an auto causing injuries to a few people last Sunday.
The Bengaluru Traffic Police have now issued a notice asking him to appear for questioning at the earliest. According to eyewitnesses, Nalapad was at the wheel and fled from the scene after the accident, leaving the car behind.
The next day, his gunman appeared before the police to own up to the accident, telling them he was the one behind the car.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) BR Ravikanthe Gowda said, "Nalapad's gunman had claimed he was at the wheel. But eyewitnesses claim Mohammad Nalapad was at the wheel. He had fled the scene. We have now issued him a notice for questioning".
Gowda said the police have eyewitnesses and technical evidence to prove Nalapad was in the driver's seat.
Neither Nalapad nor his father Harris were available for comments.
BJP spokesperson S Prakash called Nalapad a serial offender and said he should be sent to jail. "This is not the first time he has shown his high-handedness," said Prakash. "No lessons learnt and he is insulting his father by repeating these offences."
The Congress said the law will take its own course, with state party unit chief Dinesh Gundu Rao saying he is not fully aware of the facts of the matter.
"Let the police take action as per law. After that we will see what needs to be done," he said.
Nalapad had hit the national headlines two years ago for allegedly brutally attacking a youth at an upscale pub in Bengaluru in early 2018. He was arrested and had to cool his heels at a prison for 116 days.
He is now out on conditional bail facing several serious criminal charges. The new controversy is likely to blow up in Karnataka's political circles.
In another accident in the heart of Bengaluru, the son of a high-profile businessperson and the owner of an amusement park rammed his Lamborghini into a police post, later clicking a picture of himself and posting it on social media. The accused, identified as Sunny Sabharwal, later surrendered to the police.
